Halldis Hoaas is a freelancer, but has formerly been an employee at The Norwegian Theatre for more than 20 years. She has also been chief dramaturge at The Los Angeles Theatre Center, dramaturge/artistic director of The Ibsen Festival and the artistic director of the Lillehammer Olympics/LOOC.

From 2003 to 2005 Hoaas taught at The National Academy of Theatre, whereas she in 2005 and 2006 was the project leader of the planned playwright study at Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

Halldis Hoaas was nominated for The Hedda Award 1999 in the open category for the dramaturgy of Pinocchio for The Norwegian National Opera, Babette's Feast for The Arctic Theatre and Vardøger* (Warning spirits) for The Arctic Theatre in collaboration withThe National Sami Theatre Beaivváš.
