Arthur Omre
Arthur Omre (born Ole Arthur Antonisen December 17th 1887 in Brunlanes, dead August 16th in Porsgrunn) was a Norwegian writer, most known for his partly autobiographical novel "Smugglers" from 1935 and the sequel "Flight" from 1936. Both novels introduced new themes to Norwegian literature.

Omre graduated from lower secondary school in 1904, followed by a stint as a sailor. He graduated from Horten technical school in 1908. After that he worked in Rjukan (Norway), in Germany, in New York and for four years in Cleveland, Ohio. He returned to Norway in 1914 and got a job at Thune mechanical garage in Christiania (now Oslo). He married the next year and started a construction firm. In 1922 he went bankrupt and initiated a twelve year long criminal career. Omre was sentenced several times; for smuggling, for violence against police, scams and theft.
In 1935 he was released from prison after one and a half year inside. He made his debut as an author the same year with the novel "Smugglers", using the pseudonym of Arthur Omre. The novel was based on his experience during the prohibition, and the book has become a modern classic.
