Stéphane Braunschweig

Stéphane Braunschweig (born 1964) is a French opera and theatre director. From January 2010 he has been the artistic director of Théâtre National de la Colline.

Braunschweig has studied philosophy (École Normale Supérieure, Paris) and theatre (at the drama school of Théâtre National de Chaillot), and he established his own company, Théâtre-Machine, in 1988. Here he created his first productions.

Stéphane Braunschweig led Centre Dramatique National/Orléans Loiret Centre from 1993 to June 1998. From 2000 to 2008 he led Théâtre National de Strasbourg and its theatre school, and in 2009 he started working for Théâtre National de la Colline, first as a theatre director, from the next year also the artistic director. Braunschweig also has taken assignments as a freelance director within opera and theatre.

Among the productions Stéphane Braunschweig has directed are Woyzeck by Büchner (Théâtre-Machine 1988), The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare (Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and CDN Orléans Loiret Centre 1999 and again, in Italian for Piccolo Teatro the same year), The Seagull and Three Sisters by Chekhov (Théâtre National de Strasbourg 2001 and 2007), The Misanthrope and Tartuffe by Molière (Théâtre National de Strasbourg 2003 and 2008), Lulu by Wedekind (La Colline 2010) and Six Characters in Search of an Author by Pirandello (Festival d'Avignon and La Colline 2012).

He has directed Arne Lygre's Days Beneath (performed using the German title Tage unter, Berliner Festspiele and Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus 2011, and using the French title Jours souterrains, La Colline 2012), I disappear (performed using the French title Je disparais, La Colline 2011, this was the onstage world premiere of the play), plus Nothing of Me (Rien de moi, La Colline 2014).

Of Ibsen's plays he has directed Peer Gynt (CDN Orléans Loiret Centre 1996), Ghosts (Théâtre National de Strasbourg 2003, performed at The National Theatre, Oslo, as a visiting performance during The Ibsen Festival 2004), Brand (Théâtre National de Strasbourg 2005), Rosmersholm and A Doll's House (both for La Colline and both in 2009) and The Wild Duck (La Colline 2014, performed at The National Theatre, Oslo, as a visiting performance during The Ibsen Festival 2014).

Among his opera productions are Beethoven's Fidelio (Berlin Staatsoper 1995), Verdi's Don Carlo (La Scala in Milan 2005) and four productions from Wagner's The Ring cycle (Salzburg Easter Festival 2007-2010).
