Thomas Ostermeier

Thomas Ostermeier (born 1968, Soltau) is a German director. Ostermeier is the artistic director of Schaubühne (Berlin, Germany).

Ostermeier was educated as an director at The Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin.

Thomas Ostermeier has been the artistic director of Schaubühne from 1999, from 1999 to 2004 with Jens Hillje, Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig. From 1996 to 1999 he was the artistic director of the stage Baracke at the Deutsches Theater, Berlin.

Thomas Ostermeier has won a great number of awards, including The European Theatre Prize New Theatrical Realities in 2000. He won the French critics' award called Grand Prix de la Critique in 2009, for John Gabriel Borkman, and the Barcelona critics' award the same year for Hamlet. In 2009 he was also named an Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French ministry of culture, and in 2011 he was given The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Theatre Biennale in Venice.
