John Barton
John Barton (born 1928) is a British theatre director, formerly Assistant Director at Royal Shakespeare Company.
When Royal Shakespeare Company was established in 1961 Barton was among the co-founders, and Peter Hall chose him for his Assistant Director at the company. This position Barton held for more than 30 years. In the same period of time he directed more than 50 productions for RSC, alone and in collaboration with others. He still holds the honorary title Advisory Director, at the company.
Barton has also performed freelance assignments as a director for other theatres, including The National Theatre of Norway.
