Even though Mozart's librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte, took Beaumarchais play The marrigae of Figaro and removed "political" content that would have offended the Viennese imperial censors, the issues concerning law and order are still embedded in the libretto and keep audiences gripped all over the world. The institution and nature of marriage has changed radically since Beaumarchais days, but the emotions attached to relationships, to faithfulness and sexual harassment are still very much the same. Despite laws to protect women from abuse by their employers or other powerful men, quite a large percentage is still victim to harassment when it comes to employment, pay-rises, even Christmas bonusses. (Nötigung à la francaise, Psychologie heute) In adults and teenagers alike questions about morals, natural limitations and regulated no-go-zones are subject for discussion and outrage. The who is with whom and does he have the right to go out with so and sos bests friend keeps millions of viewers watching tv- soaps like friends and sex in the city. The plot in Figaro is not far away from this.
