Transitt
Transitt by Ning. Transitt was a musical theatre performance by the contemporary music ensemble Ning. Direction was by Kai Johnsen and Andy Smith, while Henrik Hellstenius had composed the music.
Transitt by Ning was based in the journey as a transformational experience, as a physical, mental and social state of transit. The audience met four musicians who examined the correlation between theatricality and sound by looking at objects, body and language as meaning-carrying elements on equal footing to the music.
Transitt revolved around the journey’s ritual character and its many resident human conditions, such as waiting time, expectation, identity and transformation. The production also touched the contrast between the private story and the public waiting room or transit hall.
Ning works with physical, theatrical and visual aspects of the musical performance and has since the start in 1997 been concerned with making contemporary music in which the musical performance as performance is emphasised. The ensemble is regarded as pioneers within the work of musical and instrumental theatre in Norway. They have been behind worldwide premieres of works by a series of Norwegian and international composers, played classics from Western post-war music, plus initiated and composed productions of their own.
In addition to drums, cello and flute electronic tools and a series of other sound sources were in use in Transitt.
The project was supported by Arts Council Norway, The Audio Visual Fund and the Norwegian music fund Norsk Musikkfond.
Transitt was presented in collaboration with the festival Ultima 2006
Transit is the Norwegian spelling of the word transit.
