Medea (2019) is a planned theatre production by The National Theatre, based on the play by Euripides, combined with recently written text by Athena Farrokhzad. The production will be performed in the theatre's venue The Torshov Theatre.
Kjersti Horn directs it.

"WhenMedea finds out that her husband Jason leaves her for another woman, she explodes. Alone in a strange country, betrayed and exiled, she plans the cruelest revenge. She means to hurt Jason's mistress, the mistress' father -and Medea's two sons. Evripides'Medea is an ancient Greek tragedy about a woman in flight. About love turned hate, white-hot rage and naked jealousy. The play has been shocking throughout the ages, with its depiction of the ultimate taboo: A mother who kills her children.
When the original play now is performed at The Torshov Theatre, it is in dialogue with a brand new commissioned work, written 2500 years later by the young, Swedish writer and activist Athena Farrokhzad. She has received several awards for her hard-hitting, political and feminist poetry about identity and being an outsider, and has become controversial in Sweden for her participation in public debate.
'Hard-hitting about being an outsider'also fits director Kjersti Horn's artistic oeuvre. With her rough, expressive and critically acclaimed stagings she has confronted and challenged audiences with issues regarding identity, body and gender.
2500 years have gone by since Medea first said 'What women were, they'll never be again. Men must recognize our power. It's now: They've put us down long enough', and it is impossible not to hear the line reverberate in our time and day. The Torshov Theatre's intimate stage is ready for an explosive confrontation, when Medea commits the unthinkable revenge.Over her husband - and the whole patriarchy."
