More

More* (2008) by Cinnober Teater (Sweden) and Ning (Norway), text by Maria Tryti Vennerød. More builds on the work with a musical idea in which everyone onstage were supposed to be singers and musicians. The instruments, however, should not go beyond the song of the text and rhythms of sound and percussion.

*More is the official English translation of the play. When performed by Cinnober, the title was hyphenated, using the Norwegian Meir and the Swedish Mera in the title of Meir/Mera.

More

More by Cinnober Teater opened in Sweden and was the international debut of Maria Tryti Vennerød as a playwright. More had also been her debut as a playwright in Norway.

Cinnober Teater always works with contemporary drama and often moves in the intersection between different artistic expressions. Like Cinnober Teater Ning also works crossing limits and has gained attention for its theatrical and visual stage productions with music.

The Maria Tryti Vennerød text More is about Ida and Benedikte who are playing by the water. The girls compete in holding their breath for the longest time, a battle Benedikte wins, but loses at the same time, as she drowns during it. After the big question is: What really happened?

The music to More was written especially for the project by Mansoor Hosseini in collaboration with the ensemble.

The project was presented in Black Box Teater in collaboration with Ny Musikk and Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival.

Press coverage

Habbestad, Ida (13.10.2008). Review titled Sterkt og abstrakt musikkteater (literally: Strong and abstract musical theatre). Dagsavisen, dagsavisen.no, 09.11.2010, http://www.dagsavisen.no/kultur/article374262.ece:
"For the one who doesn’t know the original version of More it won’t be easy to tell where her work ends and where Hosseini and the ensemble have taken over. In this the strength of the performance lays, that there is no clear border between text and music, concrete and abstract, performer and actor. Instead the performers have in an impressive manner taken all roles. Opposed to similar productions where the expressions may go on expense of the others, the involved in More succeed in drawing a picture in which music, theatre, dance and more unite. It opens for a narrative on another level, which gives a taste for, exactly, more."

Larsen, IdaLou (14.10.08). Review titled For spesielt interesserte (For the particularly interested). IdaLou Larsen, idalou.no, 09.11.2010, http://www.idalou.no/pub/idalou/kritikker/?aid=322:
"More is an artistically thorough, sometimes visually striking interpretation. But I experience this stage language as too closed and too unavailable to expand the understanding of Tryti Vennerød’s text, it rather narrows it and robs it for its general perspective. My reaction may be due to lack of competence in, and lack of interest for, a new expressionist musical/theatrical expression, but with this production I think Cinnober Teater approaches the particularly interested."
