"What happens when the past comes to get you? When the dying rise to attend to the unsolved tasks and history repeats itself over and over again? The Kermess takes place in a small town in the Austrian-Hungarian double monarchy. The shots in Sarajevo happened a year ago, and the brutality of World War I surround the party area where the citizens of the town have gathered for the annual autumn thanksgiving party in the honour of the country's great sainted king, Saint Stephan. Here, everyone meets as equals, throwing themselves into the celebration. Among them is Janez (Oddgeir Thune), who has proposed to Anka (Charlotte Frogner) and been rejected. Drunk and in despair, he hangs himself in the town's brothel.
Ghosts
But Janez refuses to give up. He wants her, and he just has to try over again. As a living dead he returns to the party, ready for a new round. He immediately lands in a love triangle, and must face been beaten again. What was supposed to be a celebration for the people, with street merchants, circus and stalls with drinks, is described as a grotesque world about to fall off a cliff instead."
