At the webpage of The National Stage the following, among other things, is written about The Glass Menagerie:

"We are brought back to the US Southern States midway into the 1930es. Here, the young Tom lives with his single mother and fragile sister Laura. The family father left many years ago. The mother lives on dreams and fantasies about past life, and possible future life. The vulnerable Laura seeks protection in a beautiful world of glass. And Tom escapes reality in his way. Everything is about to break apart.

One day, a young man is invited to dinner with the family. They all think he can be the solution to their problems, but as it turns out, not all goes according to plan.

The Glass Menagerie was the breakthrough of one of America's greatest playwrights: Tennessee Williams. He ruthlessly used his own life in his writing, and this play is his most autobiographical: The story is driven forth by the writer's poetic nerve, guilty conscience and longing."
