Teaterfabrikken 70N 30Ø opened Snø og ild* (Snow and Fire) in October 2007. Two men. Two airships. And the North Pole. Where the dreams become madness. Friendship becomes hate. Deals become ice-cold betrayals.

In 1928 a drama spun out over the North Pole. The Italian Umberto Nobile and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen played the main parts. Is the airship mast a memorial over Norwegian triumph on the North Pole, or is it an embarrassing reminder of betrayal and fight for power? It was about power and honour and about the last white spot on the polar historic map. An airship crashed in the ice and the hatred against the Italian grew in the Norwegians when the Swedish captain Lundborg could carry a wounded Nobile into safety while Norway lost one of its biggest polar heroes. In close to 100 years Amundsen has been allowed to tell his version. In Snø og Ild the Italian gets his say. Was Nobile a crook? Is Roald Amundsen the hero we think he is?

VARANGERHALLEN was transformed into Norway’s largest indoor stage and with an ensemble of 52 people, 20 musicians and one dog Teaterfabrikken 70°N 30°Ø in collaboration with Musikk i Finnmark presented Snø og Ild, a musical of international format, springing out from Vadsø.

Press coverage

"A performance which both as an experience and artistically must be among the best ever produced on a Finnmark stage. (...) The production Snø og ild challenges the version formerly accepted as the one. We meet a slick cynic and small-scale racist more than willing to lie and cheat to achieve success, honour and fame. Some would say that the musical stomp on the memory of the polar hero, but I find this an exciting effect adding an extra dramaturgic dimension."
