The Ugly Duckling

The Ugly Duckling is a production by dybwikdans, based on the fairytale by H. C. Andersen.

Siri Dybwik choreographed it.

The Ugly Duckling is a story of opposition, being different, but also about victory and joy. This is the classic story of the cygnet growing up among ducks. He is misunderstood and harassed because he is different from all the others and eventually he flees. He goes through a lot of hurt before he is eventually transformed into a beautiful swan, admired by all.

In The Ugly Duckling by dybwikdans the audience of children meets a dancer and a narrator/musician, and the performance will invite to close interaction between performer and spectator.

The children are allowed to take part in the performance, and everyone is included in a workshop before and after the show. This is not a performance just to be observed, as dybwikdans wants the children to experience the story using all senses.

The production was made for the contemporary dance festival for the youngest the spring of 2008, initiated by the culture centre of Sandnes kulturhus and RAS.

Press coverage

Line Enervold Berg, Stavanger Aftenblad, date unknown:

"H.C. Andersen's well-known story about being different is told vividly and involved by Nils Christian Fossdal, while the dancer Silje Bævre Lian describes the bird's body's advanced moving pattern to the least detail. (...) With simple, but efficient means dybwikdans has managed to make the fairytale of the ugly duckling into a story for all senses. The new twist in the performance format has become a successful project, and will probably live a long life in newly hatched swan bodies."
