Alice Bell was about the fictional woman Alice Bell’s life. Alice Bell searches for love in a divided country – and finds it. But living it out costs her life. Not that this stops the performance.

Despite a tragic subject, Alice Bell by Lone Twin is a production using humour, in an expressively theatrical acting style, characterised by music and song. The company describes it as part musical, part fairy tale.

"I grew up in the country. I moved to the city and met a man. I changed my identity to be with this man. Another man discovered this secret and threatened to kill me. I tried to stop him, but he killed me anyway. I leave behind the man I changed my identity for and my daughter Hanna. Good luck, the man I changed my identity for. Good luck, Hanna", the production’s character Alice Bell says.

Alice Bell by Lone Twin is the first of three productions in the so-called The Catastrophe Trilogy. Daniel Hit By a Train (2008) and The Festival (2010) are the next productions.

Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters make up the English performance duo Lone Twin. They have collaborated from 1997, presenting productions in Europe, North America and Australia. Their work examine terms such as place, context and identity, with duration from an hour to 24 days.

In 2006 Whelan and Winters established the sub-division Lone Twin Theatre, for which Alice Bell was the first production. Performed by an ensemble of five artists, Alice Bell also is the company’s first approach on narrative-based theatre.

In Lone Twin Theatre Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters are artistic directors, but they do not personally perform onstage.
