At the webpage of Trøndelag Theatre the following, among other things, is written about The Master Builder:

"He is quite some guy, this master builder Solness. He started with two empty hands. Now he is a man in his best age, an acknowledged architect and the boss of a blooming business enterprise. Some skeletons he has in his closets. Many have had to surrender because of his inconsiderate striving for a place at the top. But who hasn't got a skeleton or two in the closet? What is bad for one, is good for another. It may be worth mentioning that he married rich. That is a good start. He got Aline's hand and her money. So he has a lot to thank her for.

He sits by the swimming pool, flirting with little miss Fosli from his office. Keeping her warm is good. If he loses her, he will also lose his most gifted worker, Ragnar Brovik, who is engaged to Kaja Fosli. On the other hand, Brovik should not get too sure of himself.

Really, Solness is a haunted man. He fears his dodgy past and his future. Youth, with their new ideas and their energy, is closing in on him. Depression or a midlife crisis, Doctor Herdal may have said. But he is away, attending a seminar, during the performance. The master builder Solness is waiting for the fatal turn, as Ibsen calls it.

It is not happening as expected. The turn takes shape of a young unafraid girl from the mountains, Hilde Wangel. She met him when she was a child and she remembers him as young and an idealist. She comes walking, to confront him with a promise he has long forgotten. Slyly she leads him into her fantasies, and it becomes a game with the emotions of a mentally unstable person."
