An owl, a woodpecker and a swallow sit atop the highest roof in the city. They struggle to find their balance, fight and bicker. Each has their own story and way of being. They are looking for something new in life, and believe they can be left alone on the roof. The other birds tantalize their curiosity and predatory instincts. Is there a way? Can three so very different birds live together on one roof?
Birds on the roof carrying meaning, the newspaper Bergens Tidende wrote after the opening at The National Venue of Theatre in Bergen. The newspaper regarded it positive how the opera appealed to the children’s own ability to wonder. With all their questions children are the most advanced philosophers. 3x3 was a bird opera raising questions about one’s own existence and co-existence with other cultures.
Forget all preconceptions about opera as stylized vibrato art.

No beautifully singing women dying, no tenor in love and a total lack of powerful thunders from a numerous choir and orchestra. - The orchestra is in here, Glenn Erik Haugland says and points to the synthesizer, but he admits he would have liked to have a live orchestra.
