The Singing Fiddle

The Singing Fiddle (2004) by Kulturproduksjoner is a thoroughly composed narrative finding its inspiration in gypsy traditions. Martine Lund Hoel has let herself be challenged by the meeting with another culture’s music and play Balkan-inspired sounds on her Norwegian traditional fiddle, the Hardanger fiddle. Karen Høie has developed a script building on old Gypsy fairytales.

At the same time The Singing Fiddle by Kulturproduksjoner is a story about the Gypsies and their history, about the healing powers of art and love in our lives.

The Singing Fiddle is the first part of a concert theatre trilogy made in collaboration between Kulturproduksjoner and the composer and musician Martine Lund Hoel.

The Singing Fiddle is a story about the fiddler Kalo and his fiddle, about Tindir and the Baron – and the children of the next generation, Raja and Lavuta: "Her i verden var jeg fremmed lengslen er en naken kvist skogen suser sine sanger vandre må jeg, det er visst." (lyrics from The Singing Fiddle, directly translated: "Here in the world I was a stranger, longing is a naked twig, the wood is hissing its songs, I have to wander, that is certain").

The Singing Fiddle is supported by The Cultural Rucksack in Hedmark, the county of Hedmark, the municipality of Hamar, The Norwegian Actors’ Equity Association’s fund for freelancers and the county of Møre og Romsdal through participation in the production workshop Prøvekluten.

The Singing Fiddle has been performed in the festival Fritt Fram in Hamar, during UNIMA Norway’s jubilee celebration in Oslo, in the university colleges of Hedmark and Oslo, cultural exhibitions in Hedmark and Møre og Romsdal, and it has also been touring Møre og Romsdal.
