Jun Yang

Jun Yang is a performance production by the artist by the same name.

Jun Yang was born in 1975 in China, but grew up in Austria after his family moved to Vienna when he was four years old. The emphasis in his artistic work is exploring his identity in the intersection between Asian and European. He deals with being regarded as a stranger whatever the context is. Yang doesn’t consider this as primarily negative, but more as a perspective from which one can observe the world.

In Jun Yang Mr. Jun Yang uses humour to illuminate Western clichés and prejudices about China, the same way he points out Chinese prejudice and opposition against Western influence. The work of Yang reflects personal experiences in the age of globalisation, communicating on a personal, sociological and cultural level.

Jun Yang works with video, photography, installation and performance. His video work Coming home. Daily Structures of Life was exhibited during the Venice biennial in 2002. Since then he has continued working on the piece and developed the lecture performances Jun Yang and Soldier Woods and From Salariiman to Superman. His work has been exhibited several places in Europe, including programs in the modern art museum Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Manifesta 4 in Frankfurt. His visit to Avant Garden in 2005 was his first work in Norway.
