Mens vi venter får vi gå* (While we wait, we should walk)

Mens vi venter får vi gå* (While we wait, we should walk) (2020) was a digital wandering theatre production by Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theatre), based on a concept and a script by Petter Vermeli, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, Mari Dahl Sæther, Emilie Mordal, Tarjei Sandvik Moe and Kari-Ann Grønsund. The production was an audio guided wandering performance (3,5 kilometres long), playing out in the streets of Oslo during the Corona pandemic, the summer of 2020.

The actors who had written the script also took part in the audio file.

Excerpts from Erling Kagge's book Walking: One Step at a Time made a thread through the wandering. Quotes and informations from other texts were also used, as was a selection of music.

At its webpage, Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theatre) wrote the following, among other things, about Mens vi venter får vi gå* (While we wait, we should walk):

"Mens vi venter får vi gå is an audio guided wandering performance, springing out from using the opportunity the Corona crisis has provided us with, to orient anew. It is about putting one foot in front of the other, and to pay attention to things one normally does not pay attention to - to see the city anew, as if it was the first time.

The open spaces of the city have been among the few forums open to us during the pandemic, and it is a forum open to everyone in the city of Oslo. As a parallel to life at home, the walk around town may allow us to notice new details, to stop and to lift our eyes upwards.

Like the city is a conglomerate of different sources of inspiration, epochs of time, forms and colours, we have let the wandering take place in an associative and anecdotal landscape. We have found inspiration in modern as well as classic texts. We touch upon Ibsen, Hamsun, material we have written, historical facts about the places we pass, and much more.

Excerpts from Erling Kagge's book Walking: One Step at a Time makes up a thread through the wandering.

The wandering performance starts across the street from Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theatre)'s main entrance in Rosenkrantz’ gt. 10, outside of Oslo Akutten."
