More

The Children Theatre was established in 1957 by Bjørn Endreson, the artistic director and CEO of Rogaland Theatre from 1960 to 1970. After him Edit Ottosen led The Children Theatre from 1963 to 1970. From 1970 to 1973 Sverre Bentzen, Elsa Nordvang, Carl Chr. Thorsen and Per Egil Hovland were involved.

Elsa Nordvang led The Children Theatre from 1973 to 2002, when current director Bjørn Ravn Carlsen took over the responsibility.

In 2002 the name was changed into The Children and Youth Theatre.

After Rogaland Theatre took over the old gymnastics hall in Stavanger from the county of Rogaland in January 2003, The Children and Youth Theatre got its own building - called Teaterhallen (literally: The Theatre Hall) - with stage venue options as well as rehearsal rooms.

Elsa Nordvang got the Honorary Hedda 2008 for her efforts as the leader of The Children and Youth Theatre at Rogaland Theatre from 1973 to 2002.

The Hedda jury reasoned as follows:

"The Honorary Hedda is not supposed to be an annual event, but is only to be awarded when the jury can't not give it out. Wenche Foss got it in 2002, Jon Fosse in 2003, Espen Skjønberg and Toralv Maurstad in 2005. This year the jury couldn't abstain from giving out again.

The theatre offering to children and youth unfortunately is a neglected area in our rich theatre country. But there is one amazing exception. And that is here, in Stavanger, where the Honorary Award winner has provided children and youth with love to the theatre for almost 30 years, and educated, not just a number of performing artists who have enriched Norwegian theatre, but also a unique audience.

The Honorary Award goes to Elsa Nordvang, leader of The Children and Youth Theatre at Rogaland Theatre from 1973 to 2002."
