Birgitte Larsen was only 18 years old when she was accepted by The Norwegian Academy of Theatre at her very first try. This was in 2000, and in 2003 started her career at The Norwegian Theatre, where she made her debut as Angel in Songs of the Beehive.

For The National Theatre, she has interpreted roles including Erna in The Theatremaker by Thomas Bernhard (2004), Hedvig in The Wild Duck (2004), the youngest daughter in War by Lars Norén (2005), the other young woman in Jon Fosse's Sleep (2005), and the girl in Lorca's Blood Wedding (2006), Nora Helmer in Matias Faldbakken's Cold Product (2007), Indra's daughter/Agnes in Strindberg's A Dream Play (2008), Petra in Ibsen's An Enemy of the People (2008), several roles in Jorinde Dröse's dramatisation of Hamsun's Hunger (2008), several roles in Molière's The Misanthrope (2009), Simon in Nigel Williams' dramatisation of Golding's Lord of the Flies (2010), Odin's mother in Goksøyr/Martens' Foreldremøte* (PTA Meeting) (2011) and Omega/the minister of employment in Arthur Koestler's Twilight Bar (2012).

When Birgitte Larsen in 2007 won The Hedda Award for the role of Laura i The Glass Menagerie, the Hedda Jury gave the following reason:

"This year's winner is young. Not many years have passed since she graduated from her acting studies, but she already has, finely tuned and with an ear for the text, interpreted both classics likeEuripides, Ibsen, Strindberg and Lorca, and contemporary playwrights such as Lars Norén and Jon Fosse. She gets the award for her interpretation of a shy, vulnerable young woman who doesn't master life. In this role she was intense, but quiet, heart-breaking, but void of sentimentality. The interpretation was excellent performing arts, and was experienced as pure theatre magic.

The best leading actress award goes to Birgitte Larsen for her interpretation of Laura Wingfield, in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams at The National Theatre the spring of 2007."

Birgitte Larsen took part in the movie The Bothersome Man (2006).
