More

Ina Christel Johannessen was educated at The National Academy of Ballet in Oslo, where she now teaches choreography classes.

A very important part of Johannessen's artistic profile and work has been her close relationship to Carte Blanche, the national company of contemporary dance in Norway. She has been contracted by 5 different artistic leaders, resulting in 12 full-evening works since 1992. For her work for the company, Ambra, she received the The Norwegian Critics' Award for 2008.

On behalf of The Norwegian Critics' Association Inger-Margrethe Lunde said the following, among other things, during her speech at the awards ceremony for Norwegian Critics' Award:

"I say it the sooner the better: Ina Christel Johannessen is the winner of this year's Norwegian Critics' Award for dance for her convincing choreography Ambra with Carte Blanche and Iceland Dance Company. The production had its Norwegian premiere during Bergen International Festival.

What makes this performance so special is the way the volume is handled. The abstract, yet expressive movement expression makes this a symphonic work that will remain standing. With 20 dancers Ina Christel Johannessen has had the opportunity to choreograph in the big format. Seeing it again some days ago in the culture centre of Bærum Kulturhus strengthened the impression that Ambra is a monumental work in a choreographic, musical and visual way."

The complete speech can be read at the webpage of Norwegian Critics' Association (link in Norwegian only).

Ina Christel Johannessen has also worked with several international companies and institutions: Helsinki City Dance Company, The Royal Swedish Opera, Scottish Dance Theatre, Iceland Dance Company, The National Theatres in Oslo and Bergen (both in Norway), Dance and Theatre Academy of Helsinki/Finland, and the National College of Performing Arts in Oslo/Norway.

Johannessen's work is characterised by high energy in the physical movements merged with very poetic and often theatrical elements. She cooperates and is very much involved in the creation of visual elements such as lighting and scenography. These visual elements play a crucial part of her work as a whole. The musical elements are always compiled of electronic works from international composers, and always either new or rewritten works.
