The plot of Per Olof Enquist’s play Rain Snakes was found in the life of the well-known fairytale writer HC Andersen, but also touches eternally relevant issues for most people.

HC Andersen was a greatly successful writer, but he considered himself a misunderstood genius, famed for all the wrong reasons; fairytales for children, which he regarded as literature which doesn’t count. While his fairytales were successful, his novels were unread, and his plays rejected. Constantly he found himself at the centre of scandals. He did not have many friends to confide in as most people avoided his clinging and nagging ways.
