Tilfellet Torgersen* (The Case of Torgersen)

Tilfellet Torgersen* (The Case of Torgersen) was a theatre production produced by Ibsen Theatre in 2006, based on a play by Jens Bjørneboe from 1973.

Moqi Simon Trolin directed the production.

Bjørneboe wrote the play with basis in the Torgersen case, in which Fredrik Fasting Torgersen (born 1934) was sentenced for the murder of 16 year old Rigmor Johnsen. December 7 1957 Johnsen was found raped and killed in the street called Skippergata in the city centre of Oslo. Torgersen was sentenced to a lifetime in prison, ten years of which in a special secured facility. He was imprisoned for 16 years.

Torgersen has claimed that he was innocently sentenced, and prominent lawyers and writers have supported him. Several times he has applied for a new trial, but every time the application has been denied.

Tilfellet Torgersen* (The Case of Torgersen) by Ibsen Theatre was nominated for The Hedda Award 2007 in the theatre project of the year category.

Jens Bjørneboe was convinced Fredrik Fasting Torgersen had been innocently sentenced, and his play argues this point of view.

Press coverage

Writer and date unknown, Aftenposten:

"The characters are drawn clearly, but become stereotypes. So if the material is strong and the form exciting, the productions becomes a little bit too obvious. Still: The Torgersen case we will never be done with."

Writer and date unknown, Telemarksavisa:

"Theatre production about a possibly innocently sentenced man could have become a dry affair, but at Ibsen Theatre the spectators sit as if they were nailed to their chairs during the intense performance."

Writer and date unknown, Klassekampen:

"In truth involved and passionate political theatre, and it makes the production an unusual and interesting number in our emotionally detached time."
