Festning Europa* (Fortress Europe)
Festning Europa* (Fortress Europe) is a theatre production by The Norwegian Theatre, based on a text by Kristian Lykkeslet Strømskag. The project is performed at The Norwegian Theatre's Scene 3.
Uwe Kramer directs it.
The starting point for the production is how Europe meets the current refugee crisis.
The project is not identical to Dear Europe, in which Strømskag and Cramer collaborate with The National Stage, Bergen International Festival and Dramatikkens hus.

"Approximately 60 million people in the world are seeking refuge today. 26 000 refugees have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Ocean since 2000. Who is responsible? Who is guilty? And what can we do?
In Festning Europa the destinies of a boat refugee and a Norwegian family intertwine. The family goes on vacation. At the same time, a young man get into a raft somewhere else. The family flies south. The man floats north. Both are going to the same vacation island. He is fleeing war in Africa, dreaming of Europe. The family flies from Norway, dreaming of vacation. At the island the two stories meet in a dramatic moment, in which the young child of the family slides outward in the water and the refugee slides toward land.
Festning Europa wishes to reflect on dilemmas the Western Hemisphere faces these says, and to connect it in an emotional moment."

"They all talk about the same thing, and none of them talks about the same thing. (...) Nor do they actually talk with one another, they take turns in talking. They all act as if it doesn't concern them what the others say, even though one could easily argue that all (or nearly all) everyone says concerns not all of the others, but also all of us. Festning Europa* (Fortress Europe) is a theatre production with, I would also say about, collapsed communication. (…) The structure is so loose it is doomed to collapse, and they let it collapse. In this, Festning Europa forms a pessimist image, not that far removed from reality, of a public debate consisting of separate bubbles, in which there is no communication, nor any interest for communicating, across perspectives."
