Tanzung

Tanzung by Jan Decorte and Campo (Belgium). Jan Decorte has been a character in Belgia’s theatre life for 30 years and is also known as a TV celebrity and a moviemaker. He was part of the so-called Flemish wave from its beginning during the 1980es and is a master of simplification, either he deals with cutting a classic to the bone or distilling the scenographic expression to its most effectful. Jan Decorte’s trademark is the repetition, the way one finds it in rituals, in classic Greek theatre or in Japanese Noh theatre – mixed with a dose of humour and madness.

The Belgian art centre Campo challenged Jan Decorte to create a dance performance. The result is Tanzung, in which every movement is taken seriously, entangled with six English-language love poems about lust and desire.

The Belgian art centre CAMPO challenged Decorte to make a dance performance, and Tanzung is the result. The performance is a collaboration with his wife and actor Sigrid Winks and dancer Taka Shamoto, made from a motto about «taking every movement seriously», mixed with six love poems about lust and desire. One particularly famous quote thrives behind the scenes, namely: “the world is everything that is the case.” Decorte claims that this is the only sentence of Wittgenstein he has read, but it made him an immediate fan. In any case, this performance has been received as one of Jan Decorte’s most personal productions: a great tribute to a profound love affair. Tanzung premiered at CAMPO in September 2010.
