Polyphonia Variations

Polyphonia Variations by Tore Vagn Lid/ Transiteatret-Bergen: What happens when three young stage actors are confronted with a demanding musical and audiovisual concept? What happens when an established and virtuoso stage play meets the youth?

The spring of 2010, Transiteatret-Bergen launched a theatrical experiment in which director Tore Vagn Lid challenged young stage actors with material from the play Polyphonia - or born against better judgment - a visual radio play.

In Polyphonia Variations, subtitled A visual radio play with youth, the young and inexperienced performers were confronted with a material laid out beforehand in the shape of a virtuoso demanding musical and audio visual concept. This double confrontation – the unusual meeting between actor and material – was the fundament and force of power behind Polyphonia Variations by Tore Vagn Lid/Transiteatret-Bergen. The hope was to achieve an artistic exchange and development project in three parts, in which the young performers could change in meeting the material, in which the Polyfonia Variasjoner material (text/direction/music) could change in meeting the young performers and, not least, how the expression itself was changed so to include the audience in the very process.

The attempts at casting children and youth in a professional art setting have (most) often been done due to a wish for authenticity. Embargo, written and directed by Tore Vagn Lid for Hordaland Theatre (2009) went in the opposite direction. He staged the prejudice itself assisted by 11 18 year olds – 11 young hopeful – having spent two months in circular training within the cultural industry, that is, to hide their strategies and instrumental calculations and belittling techniques as well as they could, not least by taking advantage of their childish lack of danger and their authentic presence in the post-dramatic theatre. Polyphonia Variations built on these experiences while inviting to new attempts.
