At the webpage of The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about The Maids:

"Inspired by two grotesque murders performed by the Papin sisters one evening in February 1933, the French playwright Jean Genet wrote The Maids. The play caused a scandal when it was performed in Paris in 1947, due to the strong depiction of class conflicts and the simmering dissatisfaction of the working class.

In director Ragnar Lyth's version of The Maids we meet the two sisters in an institution, where Madame is the manager. Traditionally Madame and the sisters are played by women, but it was Genet's wish that the roles should be played by men. In this production the playwright gets his wish fulfilled."
