At the webpage of The Norwegian Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Tales from the Vienna Wood:

"Tales from the Vienna Wood is a broad, popular comedy with a dark, sombre undercurrent. The play was completed in 1931 and the action takes place in Vienna. The time is unstable, with mass unemployment and political tumult. The growing National Socialism lies beneath the story told and the perspectives on humanity expressed. The way Horváth ridiculed these attitudes was noticed by the Nazis, and throughout the 1930es he became a victim of censorship and persecution."

Tales from the Vienna Wood also was performed by The Norwegian Theatre in 1978, at the time under the title An der schönen, blauen Donau.
