Aalst

Aalst by Victoria (Belgium) is a documentary theatre production. The play Aalst is founded in the authentic event from the Belgian small town of Aalst, where a married couple was tried for having killed their two small children while staying in a hotel in town. The director Pol Heyvaert personally wrote the text for the production in collaboration with the playwright Dimitri Verhulst.

The text material in Aalst was found in transcripts from part of the trial against the couple. After the staging by Victoria, Aalst has been performed in several European countries, including Norway. The Norwegian version was performed under the title Drapene i Aalst (The Murders in Aalst), directed by Per Olav Sørensen and with Ane Dahl Torp and Aksel Hennie in the roles of the young parents.

In Avant Garden the original version by the Belgian company Victoria was performed in 2006. The spring program by Avant Garden says the following:

"January 1999; in the town of Aalst in Belgium a mother and a father checked in at a hotel with their two children. First they killed one of the children. Some days after they took the life of the other. The production Aalst plays out during the trial and gradually reveals the cruelties that took place. The audience gets a deep view into the thoughts of a murderer and the strong love affair between the parents.

Aalst is so-called faction theatre, a mix of fact and fiction. It is a story based on reality, in which testimonies and interviews are recited word by word, but it also includes newly written material. The play doesn’t take a stand, but adds realism to the cruel acts."
