Jan Gunnar Røise has played Tommy in When the Robbers Came to Cardamom Town (2001), Benjamin in Strindberg's Easter (2002), Cherubin in The Marriage of Figaro (2004), Herr Nilsson in Pippi Longstocking (2005), Hjalmar Ekdal in The Wild Duck (both in 2006), Jim in The Glass Menagerie (2007), Garcin in No Exit and the fish and the grasshopper in Pinocchio (2009), among other roles.

Jan Gunnar Røise has acted in movies such as Svein and the Rat, Comrade Pedersen and Hawaii, Oslo.

From the autumn of 2010 he has been central in the Comedy Lab project of The Torshov Theatre with Mariann Hole and Thorbjørn Harr. He had roles in eight of the nine productions of the project, and he also directed and wrote the script for one of them; Jåtåkdag* (Yysplyseday). The Comedy Lab project won The Hedda Award 2012 in the category of special artistic achievement.

In 2011 Jan Gunnar Røise was nominated for The Hedda Award in the category of best leading actor for the roles of Bastian in Mr. Kolpert, directed by Sofia Jupither, Joakim in Endelig skjer det noe* (Finally something happens), directed by Thomas Seeberg Torjussen, and for different roles in Ti liv* (Ten lives), directed by Kjetil Bang-Hansen, The National Theatre.

The complete ensemble of Ti liv was also nominated for The Hedda Award 2011 in the category of special artistic achievement.Onstage were Mariann Hole, Jan Gunnar Røise, Thorbjørn Harr, Anders Mordal og Ket Lødemel.

Jan Gunnar Røise also was nominated for The Hedda Award 2007 in the best supporting actor category for the role of Jim in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, produced by The National Theatre.
